Casas del Bosque’s Top Wine on Sale!

Dear Friend,

Many of you know of Casas del Bosque, a winery whose wines we have featured on our shelves for many years. They are known for producing outstanding values, both in the Reserva and the Gran Reserva tiers but most of you may have not noticed, we also carry their top wine named “Gran Bosque.” This is a Cabernet Sauvignon made from grapes from one of the best places in the world to grow Bordeaux varietals, Chile’s Maipo Valley. The region has a reputation as ‘the Bordeaux of South America’ because Chile formed a close bond with France just after gaining their independence in the early 1800's. When Chileans traveled to France, they returned with a love for French food and wine; they started growing their own grapes soon after. They planted many of them in the foothills of the rugged Andes Mountains, where the alluvial soils, sunny days and cool nights are perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

Casa Del Bosque

Casas del Bosque is a family-owned winery located just 20 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. The Cuneo family, immigrants to Chile from northern Italy, founded Casas del Bosque in 1993. Their goal was to own a boutique winery that produced modest amounts of top-quality wine. Casas del Bosque was one of the first wineries in the Casablanca Valley. The Valley is unique because it has a much cooler climate than most other grape growing regions in Chile.

Casablanca Valley's unique microclimate boasts hot days and cool nights due to the Humboldt current that brings up cold ocean water from Antarctica. The hot days allow the grapes to ripen perfectly, while the cool nights help the grapes retain freshness and acidity. While the cool climate varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow outstandingly well in coastal Casablanca, it is not ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. For their Cabernet based wines, they have vineyards in the Maipo Valley, about an hour and a half drive southeast from the winery. The fruit is sourced from some of the best sites in the Maipo Valley, the town of Puente Alto, and goes through a second selection process back at the winery ensuring only the best grapes are crushed for this wine. After fermentation, the wine spends 22 months in new (65%) and one year old (35%) French oak barrels.
