Dear Friend,
Today’s wine has been a favorite of ours for a number of years. Since receiving amazing scores for this outstanding wine, we have offered every vintage available to us in Massachusetts going back as long as I can remember. In fact, Juan Gil “Silver Label” has had seven 93 point scores since the 2014 vintage (only 92 last year) which is incredible for a wine that sells for only $16.99 a bottle. In Jumilla, they are known for the Monastrell grape, better known as Mourvèdre in France. Monastrell is a thick skinned, late ripening grape that usually has very low yields. Low yields are sometimes difficult to deal with for winemakers as it means less production, but the juice is usually more intense and flavorful, which is certainly the case with today's wine. Try now when it is on sale for only $13.59 a bottle!
Juan Gil winery, located in the Jumilla region of southeastern Spain, has a rich history dating back to 1916 when it was founded by Juan Gil Jiménez. What began as a modest family operation, has grown into one of the most respected wineries in Spain, now managed by the fourth generation of the Gil family. Situated in a rugged, sun-drenched landscape, at an altitude of around 700 meters, the winery benefits from a unique microclimate characterized by hot days, cool nights, and low rainfall. This environment, combined with the region’s limestone-rich soils, is particularly well-suited to the cultivation of Monastrell (Mourvèdre), the signature grape variety of Jumilla and a cornerstone of Juan Gil’s winemaking tradition. Over the decades, the winery has blended its deep-rooted heritage with modern innovation, earning a reputation for producing bold, flavorful wines that reflect the character of the land.
Bodegas Juan Gil "Silver Label" is their flagship wine, and it has been a favorite of mine for a very long time. Today’s wine is farmed organically, like all of their wines. This vintage still has the dark fruits it is known for but the spice is slightly toned down from previous years as now they utilize new and old French oak barrels. A common customer reaction is "this tastes a lot more expensive than it is." The home winery is over 250 acres of prime Jumilla vines, mostly planted to Monastrell. The vines here are older, mostly over 40 years and the soils are very diverse giving the grapes many different characteristics.

Juan Gil Estates makes many of Spain's greatest value-priced wines; today's offering being just one of them. Sustainability has always been a focus with efforts to preserve the natural ecosystem of the Jumilla region with their wines. 93 points is an excellent score from the Wine Advocate, especially for such an affordable red wine. With a deep color, copious ripe fruit aromas and a long, spicy but balanced finish, this wine is delicious by itself or with lots of foods from pizza to baby back ribs.It will age well for five years, maybe a bit more but it tastes so good right now there is no need to wait to enjoy! This is in stock at all locations and is certainly one to stock up on, maybe even a case!
Sincerely,
Alek Leontie
